Introduction

Sound… We’re surrounded by sounds! From the ranging chatter of the cafeteria to the quietest whisper in the library, our ears are constantly bombarded by all types of sounds.

Because we’re inundated with noises all day, we tend to filter out all but the most important — whatever it is we’re focusing on, usually. We rarely stop and listen to our environments and learn their true sonic character.

This lab activity aims to gets us all more aquatinted with the variety of sounds in our school. In doing so, we’ll classify different sounds by their characteristics and we’ll uncover the role our surroundings play in a sound’s propagation.
